However, property experts at Advanced Damp have shared an at-home-cleaning-paste that is sure to get rid of mould for good while keeping your paintwork in tact.

The UK has an issue with mould growing in homes, which can be dangerous to your health.

Mould grows by producing tiny particles called spores - these are airbound and can make it grow quickly in the house and also get into our airways.

The NHS states damp and mould in your home you're more likely to have respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma. Damp and mould can also affect the immune system.

The expert shared step-by-step instructions for “effectively” removing mould from painted walls.

GROWTH SPURT

The first step to take is to see how bad the mould growth is.

You can do this by checking whether the mould is growing on top of the paint or if there are signs it has got underneath.

PREP TIME

Before cleaning the effected area you first need to ensure the room is properly ventilated.

Savvy homeowner shares her fool-proof ‘paper test’ method of banishing and preventing mould

Start by opening the windows to let some air in and remove any furniture from against the walls - this can help prevent mould growing back and allow the walls to dry after cleaning.

SCRUB UP

Once the room is prepped, it's time to get scrubbing.

The expert recommends making a home-made concoction to tackle mould by mixing a cup of white vinegar and a quarter cup of dish soap with a bowl of warm water.

They told the Express that white vinegar helps “counteract the mould”, while the soap “boosts the cleaning action”.

The acidic properties in white vinegar can kill up to 82% of mould species reports Medicinenet.

You can then use the solution along the walls to get rid of mould, to make it more effective, let the white vinegar dry on the walls instead of wiping it off.

MOULD IN UK HOMES

According to silveroaksolicitors mould is a massive issue in British homes.

  • Privately rented households in England have damp, mould, or excessive cold in over half of homes (58%)
  • Of all the houses in England, 8% have some form of damp problem
  • Mould can effect your health, and the NHS estimates it could save £38 million per year on treating patients with damp and mould-related illnesses if damp problems in homes were rectified

If the mould has got underneath the paint, you can also go on with a mixture of bicarbonate soda and water to create a thick paste that can “penetrate and lift the mould from underneath the paint”.

Apply the solution liberally with a scrubbing sponge being careful not to damage the paintwork.

The expert adds that you should change the sponge and cleaning solution regularly while working on the area.
