AN ARCTIC blast has brought more snow - as the Met Office warns 8 inches will hit and floods spark chaos on the roads.

Yellow snow and ice warnings are in force for most of Scotland today after flurries forced schools to shut across the UK yesterday.

A warning will cover everywhere north of Glasgow and Edinburgh from 3pm today until 6pm tomorrow.

Power cuts and travel delays could be seen - along with potential injuries from falling on icy surfaces.

A whopping 8 inches of snow could fall on higher ground in the warning zone.

Other parts of Scotland will be dusted with about 3cm of snow, forecasters said.

Another snow warning will cover southern and eastern Scotland until 3pm this afternoon.

Met Office expert Dan Stroud said: "We've still got rain and many have snow making its way northwards,

"We have got further weather warnings in force. We've got a second band of cloud and rain moving northwards.

"It makes for challenging driving conditions. We've had the worst of it but it's still not completely clear.

"Where we have falling snow we see there is a risk of a few icy patches on roads.

"The focus is probably starting to shift more towards ice - people should still be cautious."

There could also be flooding of homes and businesses in southern England.

Yesterday the mercury plunged to -13.8C at Altnaharra the Scottish Highlands.

School closures were reported in Wales, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cumbria.
