Carlin came around the final bend with plenty of work to do and tried to make a late burst for bronze.

However, he ended up being wiped out as Japan's Shinji Nakano and Malaysia's Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom clattered into each other just in front of him.

Dutch star Harrie Lavreysen won gold but there was concern for Carlin as the winner crossed the line.

The Scot ripped his skin suit and medics rushed over to treat him.

Carlin was able to get back on his feet soon after and he gingerly walked away.

Medics offered to put a neck brace round him but decided against it.

The crash saw Carlin miss out on completing the medal set from the Paris Games.

He was part of the team that won silver in the men's team sprint and he picked up bronze in the individual sprint.

Carlin missing out sees Team GB finish the Olympics with 65 medals - 14 gold, 22 silver and 29 bronze.

Today's other British medal hopefuls Emma Finucane and Emily Campbell both came third in the cycling sprint and weightlifting respectively.
