'Major police operation' under way in Munich after car reportedly hits pedestrians

A major police operation is under way in Munich after a car was driven into pedestrians in the south German city, officers have said.

Germany's Bild newspaper said 15 people had been injured.

In a statement, Munich's police said: "There is currently a major police operation in the area of ​​Dachauer Street and Seidle Street.

"We are on site."

The area is close to Munich's central train station.

Police said on X they were able to detain the driver who did not pose any further threat.

People attending a demonstration linked to a strike organised by the Verdi union appear to have been affected, local broadcaster, BR said.

The union, which represents workers in the service sector and is one of the biggest in Germany said it did not have any information on the incident.

The Munich Security Conference is to start on Friday and US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy are arriving later on Thursday.
