‘People say I’m mad’ – Mum shares ‘dangerous’ Christmas tree tradition that leaves her friends speechless

A WIFE has revealed her unique Christmas tree tradition that  makes people label her “mad.”

Monica Roberts, who now lives in France, grew up in South Africa with a German mum and loved embracing her heritage.

But there’s one Crimbo quirk that the 54-year-old admits some people can’t get their heads around. 

She says: “I still have proper candles on my tree.

“Yes, real candles. I can’t tell you how many people have commented on the fact I must be mad. 

“But, I’m very careful. I use special candle holders. 

“And I have to buy a tree where the branches are quite far apart so that I don’t set fire to the tree. 

“I grew up with candles on my tree and it’s just one of those traditions that remind me of Christmas as a kid. 

“My Mum is German, so we we celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve. 

“There is nothing more special than lighting the candles when the sun sets. 

“I order special cancels every year from Germany.”

Meanwhile, Scotland’s best city for a festive getaway has been revealed.

Travel experts at Bounce analysed UK cities on factors such as the number of restaurants, the nightly cost of a hotel, and the number of TikTok views and Instagram posts for Christmas markets.

was Edinburgh that topped the Scottish list, and second overall in the UK, with its incredible festivities during period leading up to Christmas.

The capital city received a festive score of 7.50 out of ten.

Edinburgh’s Christmas Markets offer a whole host of festive fun for all the family, running for seven weeks.

The markets are open from November 17 to January 6, closing only on Christmas Day.

The stalls and attractions are spread out across four different sites - East Princes Street Gardens, West Princes Street Gardens, George Street, and St Andrew Square.

There will be countless stalls and chalets offering traditional festive food and drinks, including churros, mulled wine, and hot chocolates.

For any adrenaline junkies, the iconic Ferris wheel and helter-skelter will again be making their annual appearance alongside other kid-friendly funfair rides.

There is also the option to meet Santa himself and receive a gift at Santa’s Stories.

Edinburgh’s Christmas markets boast 13 million views on TikTok and over 51,300 posts on Instagram.

There were 20,530 searches for the term “Edinburgh December” and 114,400 searches for the phrase “Edinburgh Christmas” on Google over the past year.

This means that it is the third most-searched city in the UK for festive breaks.
