As Israel’s military campaign in Gaza intensifies, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has approved a $147.5 million arms sale to Israel through an emergency authority that bypasses the standard congressional review process. In a Friday announcement, the State Department said the proposed sale of 155-mm artillery shells and related equipment is consistent with the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security and efforts to help it “develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability.” UNRWA, the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, said Friday that IDF soldiers fired on a U.N. aid convoy returning from a delivery in northern Gaza, an incident U.N. humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths condemned as “unlawful.”

South Africa on Friday called on the International Court of Justice to find that Israel’s war in Gaza is a violation of the Genocide Convention of 1948. The filing accused Israel of engaging “in genocidal acts against the Palestinian people in Gaza.” Israel’s Foreign Ministry called on the court to dismiss the filing, which it “rejects with disgust.”
The Kerem Shalom crossing at Gaza’s border with Israel reopened Friday after closing because of “significant security incidents” in its vicinity, the U.N. humanitarian agency said in an update. Eighty-one trucks carrying food and medicine entered Gaza through Kerem Shalom and Rafah on Friday, the agency said, calling the volume “woefully inadequate.”
Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera said its journalist Montaser Nassar and an accompanying photographer were assaulted Friday by Israeli forces in the West Bank. The IDF did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
At least 21,507 people have been killed in Gaza and 55,915 wounded since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. About 1,200 people were killed in the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
