Middle East conflict live updates: Biden rejects genocide claims against Israel; over 810,000 have fled Rafah
The ICC prosecutor said he is seeking arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Hamas leader Yehiya Sinwar and other top Hamas officials. While other world leaders offered relatively muted responses, Biden called the move “outrageous,” saying “there is no equivalence — none — between Israel and Hamas.”
Netanyahu said the pursuit of arrest warrants against Israeli officials is a “travesty of justice” that will “turn the ICC into nothing more than a farce.” In a statement, Hamas accused the ICC prosecutor of trying “to equate the victim with the executor.”
At least 35,562 people have been killed and 79,652 injured in Gaza since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but says the majority of the dead are women and children.
Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, including more than 300 soldiers, and says 282 soldiers have been killed since the launch of its military operation in Gaza.
