A HUMAN head has washed up on a beach in Florida, sparking a police investigation.
The grim discovery was made around 8:30 am on Tuesday by a worker who was raking Miami Beach.
He immediately called the Miami-Dade Police Department who confirmed that the head was human.
The stretch of beach where the body part washed up has been sectioned off with police tape amid an ongoing investigation.
Footage taken from the air after the shocking find shows that the head was covered with a blue tarp and marked out with traffic cones.
The identity of the individual is not yet known.
A police official told NBC Miami that the Medical Examiner will be working with detectives to find out who they are.
Local residents have been left horrified by the news.
"You see all kinds of things here but nothing like this, like we saw this morning. The head of a person," Bahman Amini told CBS News.
"This is my typical route. Our neighborhood is very safe," another local told WPLG.
"We have our children here; our children play on these beaches and it's just beyond belief."
The Miami-Dade Police Department has been contacted for an update.
