Boy, 11, killed & 4 children injured after car veers off road & crashes into Melbourne primary school as driver arrested

ONE child has died and four have been injured after a car crashed through the fence of a Melbourne primary school.

The car hit where five students were sitting during a break - with an 11-year-old boy taken to hospital with critical injuries where he tagically later died.

Two 11-year-old girls, one 10-year-old boy, one 10-year-old girl were also injured in the horror collision.

The car, a white SUV, veered off the road and ploughed through the fence of Auburn South Primary School in Hawthorne East.

A 40-year-old Hawthorn East woman has been arrested by cops, while a primary school-aged child who was a passenger in the car was unharmed. 

Victoria Police Inspector Craig McEvoy said the driver was attempting a U-turn before veering off the road.

McEvoy said it appeared the crash was a "tragic accident" and confirmed officers were investigating.

He said: "(It’s) a really tough scene, always when children are involved."

He said the vehicle that crashed through the school fence had the Australian equivalent of a P-plate on it.

But cops could not confirm what the driver's licencing status was.

Inspector McEvoy said: "The ongoing investigation will takes days, weeks, months."
