BBC fans battle to save axed show with whopping Rotten Tomatoes score as petition hits 50k signatures

BBC viewers have demanded that the broadcaster renew a hit series with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Distressed fans of Our Flag Means Death have come out in arms and gained 50,000 signatures to get the show back on screens after it was axed.

The petition describes the cancellation of the popular comedy series as ‘deeply disappointing’ and states, “If the production team is determined for another voyage, we stand by, ready to support.”

Two seasons of the Taika Waititi series are available on BBC iPlayer, but earlier this month, it was announced that season two was the last.

Our Flag Means Death proved hugely popular and was awarded a strong 7.8 out of 10 on IMDb.

Leading star Rhys Darby, who played Stede Bonnet, responded to the show being axed by the BBC with a poignant X(Twitter) post alongside a snap of the cast, which read: "Us for you, forever... with love."

Fans quickly swarmed the actor's comments section with well wishes and praise as one said: “Thank you for being you and giving us characters to remember and to be inspired through.

“I could take 10 more sessions of OFMD if it meant seeing your character grow and develop.

“Now I just have to settle by following your own real-life journey.”

Another added: “Love you guys, thank you for everything. thank you for Stede, captain.”

A third chimed: “We’re not giving up without a fight, cap #SaveOFMD.”

They added: “But whatever happens, we can’t thank this amazing cast and crew enough for the joy you’ve given us and the renewed reasons for living we’ve discovered.”

A fourth wrote: “Thank you for everything and for bringing Stede to life the way you did, he’s a special one and always will be.”

Another followed it with: “Your hilarious & heartfelt portrayal of Stede got me through my own midlife crisis/career change, and I can’t thank you enough for all the heart & soul you & the crew put into this show.

“I’m grateful for the two seasons we got, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry real tears.”

The show founder, Perla Nation, pleaded: “Now, more than ever, our voices need to be heard. There is a very small window of time to get WB Discovery to reverse their decision.

“Blast them with sheer volume and love! Keep it positive! Threats do more harm than good.”

Creator David Jenkins previously revealed that at least three seasons of the comedy, which follows a group of hopeless pirates, are in the pipeline.

Speaking to Polygon, he said: “I think three seasons is good.

“I think we could do it in three. I mean, I don’t know — your perception of what the story really is changes so much in the writers’ room. If it doesn’t, you’re doing it wrong.

“Because you’ve got all these other super-smart writers who have their own life experiences, and you talk through the season with them, and then you’re like, 'Oh, man, there’s all this other stuff there'. But right now, I feel like we could probably do it in three.”

Last year, BBC fans were also disappointed after the broadcaster axed Catherine Tate’s hit comedy show Queen of Oz after just one series.
