  • Jack Rosser's verdict

And here's the THIRD and final French selection from our six experts. But if Jack's right there could at least be a consolation for Harry Kane...

WINNERS: France. As much as we would all love to see England triumph, it is hard to look past the French. They have some making up to do after being knocked out by Switzerland in 2021.

England’s Harry Kane is pipped to in Golden Boot by two SunSport reporters

BEATEN FINALISTS: Portugal. Roberto Martinez has an attacking arsenal any manager would envy. Behind the forward line there are some wily old operators.

SURPRISE PACKAGE: Austria. Boss Ralf Rangnick may well have been a flop at Manchester United, but he has really got Austria going.

They have six wins and a draw from their last seven games — including victory over hosts Germany.

PLAYER OF TOURNAMENT: Kylian Mbappe. Now leading France not only as their best player but also the captain, Mbappe will want to make another big impact.

GOLDEN BOOT: Harry Kane. Fresh from an incredible goalscoring season with Bayern Munich, Kane remains England’s greatest hope of progress.

ONE TO WATCH: Warren Zaire-Emery. France’s 18-year-old sensation won the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year at PSG.

  • Tom Barclay's verdict

It's another vote for the French - from one of our senior football reporters.

WINNERS: France. They have the best player in Kylian Mbappe and a manager in Didier Deschamps who knows how to get it done on the big stage.

BEATEN FINALISTS: Portugal. They have the most complete squad   but question marks surround boss Roberto Martinez after he struggled to get the best out of Belgium’s golden generation.

SURPRISE PACKAGE: Hungary. Dominik Szoboszlai and Co showed  how dangerous they are by thrashing England 4-0 on their own patch two years ago.

PLAYER OF TOURNAMENT: Kylian Mbappe. The world’s best player has just moved to the world’s biggest club Real Madrid, and will want to show he is le coq of the walk.

GOLDEN BOOT: Cristiano Ronaldo. The goal machine remains as prolific as ever.

ONE TO WATCH: Xavi Simons. Talented Dutch winger had such a good campaign on loan from PSG last season at RB Leipzig that Bayern Munich want to borrow him now.

  • Dan King's verdict

Our Sports News Columnist believes CR7 could peak his international career over the next four weeks. Here's how and why.

    DAN KING

WINNERS: Portugal. They had the quality and depth to have won the World Cup.

And if Cristiano Ronaldo can drag one final show from himself, they have a massive chance of winning this.

    Credit: AP

BEATEN FINALISTS: France. They are too good, surely, not to reach the final but once again perhaps not quite good enough to win.

Only a side with similar quality but better cohesion can stop them.

SURPRISE PACKAGE: Hungary. With Dominik Szoboszlai as their talismanic captain they’ve beaten some big teams. Now it’s time to do it at a tournament.

PLAYER OF TOURNAMENT: Bruno Fernandes. Manchester United’s captain can take out the frustrations of his club season on Europe with Portugal.

GOLDEN BOOT: Kylian Mbappe. If France play seven games, it will almost certainly be Mbappe’s goals that get them through.

ONE TO WATCH: Johan Bakayoko. The Belgian star of PSV Eindhoven’s  title win is already on the shopping list of bigger European clubs.

A manageable group gives him the chance to show why.

  • Charlie Wyett's verdict

Our Football Editor has faith in the Three Lions to land their first silverware since 1966. Here's his explanation...

WINNERS: England. It really is now or never for Gareth Southgate and his talented squad.

Charlie Wyett believes Jude Bellingham could end up as the Euros' best player

BEATEN FINALISTS: Portugal. Along with France and England, Cristiano Ronaldo and Co are among the tournament’s best three teams.

SURPRISE PACKAGE: Georgia. Their first-ever major tournament but the Georgians could be a handful.

PLAYER OF TOURNAMENT: Jude Bellingham. Did not take long to become a fan favourite at Real Madrid and provided an assist for the key second goal in their Champions League final win.

He is going to be the best player in the world — and Euro 2024 could be his tournament.

GOLDEN BOOT: Bellingham. He has proved with Real that he knows where the goal is with 23 to his name in his debut season — and he could end up scoring more than Harry Kane.

ONE TO WATCH: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Georgia’s Napoli winger (left) is a terrific player and rediscovered his best form just before the end of the Serie A season.

  • Martin Lipton's verdict

Now it's the turn of our Chief Sports Writer, who reckons treating a legend as 'Ron of the lads' could make all the difference...

WINNERS: Portugal. As long as Roberto Martinez has the courage to treat Cristiano Ronaldo as a squad member and not his star player. CR7 is 39, not 29.

    Credit: Getty

BEATEN FINALISTS: France. Scheduled to meet England in Dortmund in the second semi. It might take too much out of the winner for them to recover for the final.

SURPRISE PACKAGE: Hungary. The glory days of the 1950s are long ago but quietly the Magyars are becoming quite mighty again.

Dominik Szoboszlai has shown his quality. Potential last eight side.

PLAYER OF TOURNAMENT: Bernardo Silva. Manchester City star has the freedom to play where he wants and if Portugal fly he will have the most powerful wings.

GOLDEN BOOT: Harry Kane. England might fall short but they should make the last four — so that is six games for the  skipper to bag a bucketful.

ONE TO WATCH: Roland Sallai. Hungary right-winger has impressed  at Freiburg and is coming into his peak at 27.

  • Dave Kidd's verdict

Our Chief Sports Writer delivers his assessment - and explains why he thinks it will be a case of French bliss.

WINNERS: France. They have the deepest squad, the best player in the world in Kylian Mbappe and more experience than any  nation at going deep in tournaments.

Dave Kidd backs Kylian Mbappe and Co for glory
Dave Kidd backs Kylian Mbappe and Co for glory

BEATEN FINALISTS: Portugal. A hugely-talented and well-balanced squad who are capable of going all the way — and should have done so in Qatar.

SURPRISE PACKAGE: Serbia. Very capable of beating England in Sunday’s opener and getting to the quarter-finals at least.

Often under-achieve but they are in form and dangerous this time around.

PLAYER OF TOURNAMENT: Antoine Griezmann. Was outstanding at the World Cup but might even outshine team-mate Mbappe in Germany.

GOLDEN BOOT: Romelu Lukaku. Belgium have an easy group, in which their big centre-forward could build up an  unassailable lead.

ONE TO WATCH: Florian Wirtz. Was Bayer Leverkusen’s star boy in their unbeaten Bundesliga season and is ready to translate his red-hot form on to the international stage for the host nation.

  • Man Utd, Arsenal & Chelsea eye Cherries ace

Prem giants are reportedly monitoring Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez.

The £35million-rated left-back, 20, is at Euro 2024 with Hungary.

Journalist Ben Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT United and Chelsea have so far shown the firmer interest.

  • Utd hope to make Jarrad first signing of Ratcliffe era

Jarrad Brathwaite could become Manchester United's first signing under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Everton's reported £70milion valuation of the England centre-back remains a huge stumbling block.

But reports tonight suggest that the first stage of any deal has been passed.

That's because the 21-year-old, who is in Germany for Euro 2024, is understood to have accepted personal terms on offer from United.

But The Times say the Toffees won't back down on their asking price.

And if an Everton takeover goes through, Goodison chiefs are determined to keep Branthwaite.

  • Ukraine ace linked to Gunners

Real Madrid keeper Andriy Lunin could be on Arsenal's radar.

The Ukrainian is at Euro 2024 but at the centre of transfer talk in Spain.

Real president Florentino Perez has reportedly valued the 25-year-old at £34million.

And Spanish radio station Cadena Cope suggest Arsenal have made contact.

The Gunners want a back-up keeper to David Raya.

Lunin amassed 31 appearances in all competitions for Real last term, keeping 10 clean sheets.

  • Man Utd legend says England lack ‘winning mentality’

EXCLUSIVE: Jaap Stam claims a “lack of winning mentality” is one reason both England and his native Holland struggle to win major tournaments, writes ALESSANDRO SCHIAVONE.

The Manchester United 1999 Treble winner knows both nations have players with “a lot of quality”.

    Credit: Getty

The former centre-back, 52, told SunSport: “If you want to win a tournament, it’s totally different to winning a league because you need to have a certain mentality in your team.

“The Italians have it, the Argentinians have it. England, I don’t know if they have it — they are similar to us!

“Holland is lacking it and that’s why we never won a tournament. We have a lot of quality but not always that mentality to finish it off.

“We Dutch always seem to lose or lack a little bit of that winning mentality at the end.

“Other countries don’t start off well but get through the first phase then they’ve got that mentality within that they want to win everything, they want to kill it.”

  • I don't want to be Andy Rue-bertson

Andy Robertson is driven by the dream of Scotland reaching the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time.

Ahead of tomorrow's Euro 2024 opener with hosts Germany, the skipper and Liverpool left-back says we "do not want any regrets this time".

The Scots managed only one point and one goal at Euro 2020 three years ago.

Now Steve Clarke's men take part in this summer's tournament opener at the Allianz Arena.

Robertson said: "We know that's what's at stake.

"We've got a lot of incentive but one is becoming that legendary squad - that has to drive us forward.

"We have to be at our best and if we can do that, who knows where we'll be come 23 June."

  • Wrighty hails 'Man Utd target' Jarrad

Ian Wright has given a glowing review of Manchester United target Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Red Devils reportedly had Everton centre-back Branthwaite at the top of their list of potential new centre-backs this summer.

    Credit: Getty

But a £70million valuation for the England ace, 21, is understood to have baulked United's interest.

However, Arsenal legend Wright appears to reckon he would be a major asset for any Prem club.

The ex-Three Lions' striker told The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast: “Pace? Oh, brilliant. Reading of the game? Fantastic. Attacking the ball? brilliant in both boxes. Passing out…”

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail suggest United are still pondering making an offer for Branthwaite - even if it' might not 's unlikely to meet the Toffees' demands.

  • Declan insists 'no excuses'

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice claims England will have "no excuses" for Euro 2024 failure.

The Gunners' £105million buy said: “We know what we’ve got to do to win.

    Credit: Getty

“We’ve got no excuses. The Euros are the last thing now that can really help me get over the hurt.

“Seeing Italy lift that cup in front of us last time: that feeling’s still in our belly.

“We want to get that now. Putting on that shirt before a major tournament again, that is such a good feeling. I feel like we’re ready… I’m ready.”

  • Lions' wings can make us Euro kings

Harry Kane reckons England deserve their tag as one of the tournament’s favourites and is convinced Gareth Southgate’s team can do it.

And he believes the talent of wide men Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Jarrod Bowen could destroy England’s opponents - starting with Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

Kane said: "Gareth had a really tough decision and some really tough calls to make because we have some really good attacking players for England.

    Credit: Getty

"But, for me personally, it's fantastic. I want to be playing with players who can provide assists, can score goals and have good movement and can get on the ball in tight areas - and we have all of that."

As for being one of the favourites, he said: "I think we've earned the right to have that status through the previous tournaments we've had. But we're also a team that hasn't won a Euros before, so we're trying to make history here.

"We need to make sure we get it right because, in these tournaments, if you're not quite on it 100 per cent, you can be punished.

"I think this squad is one of the best, if not the best, we've had, going on form and the domestic seasons a lot of us have had. We have incredible young talent coming through who are fearless and just want to get on the ball and play.

"I hope that the guys can lean on me and ask me questions, and if I can help them get through anything, then great."

  • Kane's note to Mull over

Harry Kane received a note from Bayern Munich team-mate Thomas Muller after arriving at England's base camp for the Euros, writes CHARLIE WYETT.

The Three Lions are staying at the five-star Spa & Golf Resort Weimarer Land which is where Germany were based last week.

And Kane revealed he was left a message by Bayern pal Muller.

Kane said: "Tommy left me a little note, because they were here just a couple of weeks ago. He texted me saying the golf course is great but the weather has not been so good.

"It looks fantastic, the hotel is incredible, and to be in Germany is a bit of a home from home.

"The reception I've had since I've been at Bayern has been incredible, and ever since I've been in the hotel, I've had some of the staff come up and say hello.

"I'm not saying they want England to win, but I think they have a little soft spot for us now I'm here, and that's fantastic."

  • Three Lions eye £24m jackpot

England can bank nearly £24m in Euro 2024 prize money if they go all the way to glory in Berlin, writes MARTIN LIPTON.

Uefa have confirmed the total cash pot on offer for the 24 qualifiers is a huge £279m.

Gareth Southgate’s side guaranteed the qualification bonus of £7.8m when they topped their group, consigning Italy to the play-offs.

And with cash on offer the same as it was in the delayed Euro 2020 - despite Uefa banking on record revenues of £2bn for the tournament - it means the Three Lions can give Wembley coffers a significant boost.

Each win the the first stage will be worth around £840,000, meaning a trio of wins to finish first in Group C will mean £2.53m plus £1.26m for reaching the last 16.

Making the quarter finals would be worth a further £2.1m, with £3.37m on offer for reaching the semi-finals and a further £6.74m if England are European champions for the first time.

Uefa has totted up significant expenses on putting on the tournament, with the 10 host cities also spending around £247m between them to stage the next four weeks.

Under an agreement with the European Club Association, every club will receive £8,400 per day that one of their players in involved in the tournament, starting from June 4 - 10 days before kick-off - and up to the day their nation is eliminated.

  • Fans from 94 countries flock to Germany

Fans from a staggering 94 countries will be arriving in Germany to watch England’s bid for Euro 2024 glory, writes MARTIN LIPTON.

Supporters from 134 nations across the globe have bought tickets for the next month’s action - with more than a quarter of all seats sold to fans based in the USA.

Stats compiled by Viagogo, the world’s biggest ticket exchange and resale company, show that Spain have the largest global appeal, with fans living in 102 nations paying to watch La Roja in action.

They are closely followed by France (99), Portugal (98) and Italy (94), with England in fifth place and Scotland’s matches in demand from supporters from 78 nations, although there was huge demand for their opener against Germany in Munich tonight.

Viagogo Managing Director Cris Miller said: “It’s clear that fans worldwide are eager to be part of the Euros and we are helping to connect fans and provide access where previously matches may have been out of reach.

“It once again shows the distances fans are willing to travel for major events to support their favourite teams and players.”

  • Kobbie's growing claims

Kobbie Mainoo has proved he will measure up for England - by confirming he is much taller than the internet suggests he is, writes TOM BARCLAY

The web had the Manchester United midfielder, 19, down as 5ft7ins.

But Mainoo insisted he is 6ft to team-mate Cole Palmer on the FA’s Lions’ Den show at their Euros base in Blankenhain, Eastern Germany.

He told the Chelsea star: “I’m six foot, bro. Why you laughing?”

Palmer then put his pal to the test by getting the tape measure out - and Mainoo came out at 184cm, with shoes on, which does indeed equate to 6ft.

Let’s hope the teenager walks just as tall when representing his country this summer!

Meanwhile, Palmer admitted he did not expect his season to end with him making the Euros squad when he left Manchester City for Chelsea in a £45million deal last summer.

The 21-year-old said: “When I went to Chelsea, this was the last thing I thought about. So to be here, it just happened so fast.”

  • Get ready for 'super sexy' Austrians

Ralf Rangnick's “super sexy” Golden Generation of Austrian football is ready to shock the Euros group of death, writes JACK ROSSER.

Manchester United fans will have unhappy memories of Rangnick’s six-month interim spell at Old Trafford from November 2021 – the one blot on an incredible footballing CV.

But the German coach, 65, is now back to doing what he does best – managing, developing, inspiring and transforming players and teams at the very highest level.

And after two years at the helm of Austria, one his toughest tasks lay ahead – navigating a major tournament group from hell that consists of Poland, Netherlands and France.

Fellow Austrian Gerhard Struber – recently in charge at Red Bull Salzburg and one of Rangnick’s proteges – said: “The typical Austrian speech for a tournament like this is normally how we have no chance, but Ralf is completely different in this way.

“We have, I would say, the best squad ever in the history of football in the Austrian association.

“And Ralf gives strength and big power to the team and says when we are very close together, we can win against France, we can win against Netherlands.

“At the moment, the spirit in the team is super sexy and I would say this can make maybe the difference. They now love to come together and love to play in this style.

“It is not always about words; Ralf can inspire players in a direction and a clear idea of how to play. He has this very deep in his core. With this identity, we can win games against top teams.”

A number of players have been struggling with flu since the squad gathered in France before travelling to Germany to prepare for Euro 2024.

Ousmane Dembele, the Paris Saint-Germain winger, revealed that he had been suffering but is hopeful that everyone will be recovered soon.

He said: "For me I am a lot better. I had the flu last week and I was the first one but I feel a lot better now.

"The team is a lot better. Everyone will be okay in a couple of days."

Manager Didier Deschamps is also understood to have been struggling with illness.
