I always celebrate Christmas on Boxing Day – people say I’m strange but it’s more fun my way
A MUM has told how she celebrates Christmas on Boxing Day instead after changing tradition years ago.
Kathryn Dunn, from York, made the switch nearly 20 years ago and insists it’s made the festive period even more enjoyable.
The hypnotherapist, who runs her own business, admits people think her arrangements are strange.
But the 54-year-old has no plans on returning to a ‘normal’ routine.
She says: “My kids are 23 and 27 now but when they were about five and eight we had a couple of years in a row where one or both of them were sick on Christmas Eve.
“So we switched having Christmas Dinner to Boxing Day and it sort of stuck.
“I love it because I get to enjoy the fun bits of Christmas, opening presents, watching TV and eating too much chocolate without the pressure of having to focus on getting Christmas dinner ready.
“Plus, it means there’s something nice to look forward to on Boxing Day.
“On Christmas Day itself we have snacks, dips and nibbles.
“I might cook a gammon on Christmas Eve and then we have gammon and chips or sometimes steak.
“I actually enjoy cooking on Boxing Day much more because it’s the focus of the day and everyone has time to help with getting everything ready so it’s more of a family activity.”
Kathryn adds: “We did try going back to Christmas Day a couple of times over the years but really it was never as much fun.
“I get strange looks when I tell people about it but it works for us.
“I wouldn’t choose to do anything else.”
