Joe Biden secures Democratic nomination with Georgia primary win after Trump’s wild comment about his ‘only opponent’
PRESIDENTIAL incumbent Joe Biden has officially secured his Democratic nomination following the results of Georgia's primaries.
Biden has been the favorite for the DNC presidential candidate nomination, and despite some pushback from his typical voter base, he has officially secured his spot.
On Tuesday night, the Associated Press called Georgia Primary results as Biden surpassed the 1968 votes needed for his nomination.
As some Democratic voters have gone "uncommitted" instead of ticking his name on the ballot, Biden was facing potential trouble in reaching the 50% voter threshold in states needed to secure delegates for the 2024 race.
In Biden's securing of the swing state's delegates, it is likely that Donald Trump and Biden will face off in the 2024 presidential race, not that it was ever a question for the former.
A day prior to Tuesday's primaries, Trump shared his perspective on the day's outcome with CNBC.
“I assume he’s going to be the candidate,” Trump said of Biden.
“I’m his only opponent other than life, life itself.”
As he entered into three big primaries in Mississippi, Washington, and Georgia, Biden battled a growing movement from voters fed up with his handling of the Israel-Palenstine conflict.
“If you really want our votes, if you want to win this election, you’re going to have to show a little bit more either support of Palestinian liberation — that’s something that’s very important to us — and ceasing funds to Israel,” said Bella Rivera, a preschool teacher who spoke to AP.
In January, over 100,000 votes went to the uncommitted box, securing it two delegates.
Following his victory in Georgia, Biden posted a celebratory video to X.
"Clinched the nomination," appeared over the video in large script before the president's voice began narrating.
"This is a time of choosing. So let us choose the truth. Let us choose America," he began.
"Today is the day to call to action, with your voice, with your power, with your vote."
The presumptive nominee went on to call voters to action, leaning into the idea of power in numbers, and asking his constituency to show up at the polls.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
"Are you ready to defend democracy?"
Biden's victory video is in line with the campaign he has run thus far which targets Trump as an enemy of democracy.
The now two-time presidential candidate's victory is all the more sweeter ain reviewing his and Trump's history with Georgia.
