The United States will strike additional targets at “times and places of our choosing,” President Biden said in a statement, after the latest U.S. attacks on militia groups backed by Iran. On Friday, U.S. forces hit 85 targets in Iraq and Syria operated by Iran-backed militia groups, U.S. Central Command said. The attacks were in response to a Jan. 28 attack in Jordan that killed three U.S. soldiers.

At least 18 militants were killed in the U.S. strikes, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Washington Post could not immediately verify the figure, which is the first to come out regarding the overnight attacks.
U.S. Central Command said the U.S. attack on Friday involved B-1 bombers flown from the United States. Among the locations hit at four sites in Syria and three sites in Iraq were command and control posts, intelligence centers and drone storage facilities, officials said.

The actions target officials in an Iranian government agency that the United States accused of cyberattacks, as well as entities in Iran and Hong Kong allegedly involved in procuring materials and technology for the Iranian drone program.
At least 27,131 people have been killed and 66,287 injured in the Gaza Strip since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.
