GAVIN and Stacey WILL return for another Christmas special - but James Corden and Ruth Jones have bad news for fans.

There has been speculation around the hit BBC comedy's return ever since its last outing at Christmas in 2019.

But now fans have finally got the news they hoped for, and that Gavin and Stacey will be back for another Christmas Special.

The show's writers and stars - James Corden and Ruth Jones - shared the news on social media on Friday.

The pair posed for a black and white snap with the script in front of their faces, the show's title clear at the top.

However, with the good news comes the bad, as the script revealed the show will be called "Gavin and Stacey: the finale", making it the last ever episode.

Alongside the snap, James, 45, wrote: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey.

"See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

Famous fans of the show were quick to comment, with Emmerdale's Lisa Riley writing: "DING DONG" alongside lots of clapping emojis.

Former footballer Rio Ferdinand replied: "I'm clearing the diary...."

Meanwhile other fans were just as ecstatic about it, with one writing: "This has made my whole year!!!"

Another shared: "Well it’s about fffing time James. She’s been on one knee for what? 2 or 3 years?"

A third quoted the show, writing: "OH MY CHRIST".

The 2019 Christmas Special was one of the biggest shows for the BBC with 18.49 million viewers watching Ruth's character Nessa propose to James' alter ego Smithy at the end.

His answer was left as a cliffhanger and fans have been desperate to find out what he said ever since.

Gavin and Stacey first aired in 2007 and ran for three series until 2010 before returning for the Christmas Special in 2019.
