The show saw Sinéad Keenan and Sanjeev Bhaskar both returning as their characters DI Khan and DCI James.

The episode began when suspected human remains were uncovered on Whitney Marsh.

Jess and Sunny were immediately called to the scene, abandoning their evening plans to Jess’s husband’s annoyance.

Dr Balcombe’s analysis revealed that the remains were relatively recent and suggested that the body was placed after it had been dismembered.

Jess and Sunny then intensified their search certain that other body parts would be nearby.

But a blast from the past made a shocking appearance at the end of the episode.

In the closing scenes, we learned the identity of the human remains that were found in the Marsh.

Sunny explained to Jess that the body was Gerard Cooper, who disappeared in 2021, and that the police investigation concluded that, although his body was never found, Cooper had taken his own life by jumping into the Thames.

He then revealed that the officer that the investigating officer of Cooper's disappearance was Ram Sidhu (Phaldut Sharma), who viewers last saw back in season 4.

Chatting exclusively to RadioTimes.com about Sidhu's shock return, Sinéad said: "It’s brilliant. I gasped, I audibly gasped."

Sanjeev added: "I did too. I think the antagonism between Ram Sidhu and Sunny was more pronounced than any other character.

"And also, it harks back to season 4, when we met him, where Sunny emotionally feels as though he was part of the thing that killed Cassie.

"So there’s all sorts of dark claws from the past that are pulling at him within that.

"Plus the antagonistic relationship he had with him anyway. But yeah, the minute I read it, I did go: 'Wow, OK, that was unexpected."
