Israel-Gaza war live updates: Israel is seeking control of Gaza-Egypt border corridor, Netanyahu says
A U.S. Navy destroyer shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen while responding to an earlier missile strike on a container ship crossing the southern Red Sea, U.S. Central Command said Saturday night. The Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned Maersk Hangzhou is “reportedly seaworthy and there are no reported injuries,” Centcom said, adding that this is the 23rd such attack by the Houthis on international shipping since Nov. 19.
South Africa has begun International Court of Justice proceedings against Israel, accusing it of “genocidal acts against the Palestinian people in Gaza,” according to a statement published by the court. The ICJ is tasked with resolving legal disputes between U.N. member states. Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Friday denounced the filing in a statement on social media.
Fierce fighting continued in Gaza over the weekend, the Israeli military said Saturday, as its forces carried out strikes by air and sea. Residents of the Bureij and Nuseirat refugee camps in central Gaza reported Israeli airstrikes overnight and into Saturday, according to the Associated Press.
At least 21,672 people have been killed in Gaza and 56,165 wounded since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. About 1,200 people were killed in the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
