After years of free spending, the D.C. government faces a $4 billion budget shortfall through fiscal 2029. Pandemic relief money has dried up and a commercial real estate recession threatens the tax base — but raising taxes could undermine the capital city’s competitiveness. Meanwhile, D.C. needs to hire hundreds of police officers to reduce crime — a serious concern of the public — while addressing chronic absenteeism in public schools and repurposing the site where RFK Stadium will soon be demolished. The D.C. Council desperately needs fiscally responsible and serious-minded members to tackle these hard choices.
