Former Coronation Street star Millie was expected to stay by the Doctor's side for at least two full series - but the show's bosses have decided to drop Ruby.

Millie, 19, who played the orphan will be replaced by Varada Sethu, 32, for Ncuti Gatwa's second run as the Doctor.

In the past, some companions have stayed for just one year, including Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts.

Russell T Davies is said to be "keeping things moving" with his decision to write Ruby out, according to sources.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Ncuti showed his support for Millie after they made their Doctor Who debuts together.

He posted a photo of the actors on set and in character, and wrote over the top: "My lil twin."

Other companions have lasted more than one series.

Jenna Coleman, who played Clara Oswald stayed on the show for four years.

An insider told The Mirror: "Millie Gibson has all but left now and there's a brand new companion, which is really exciting.

"Russell is keeping things moving and isn't letting the grass grow, that's for sure."

Millie played Kelly Neelan on the cobbles for three years before leaving the soap in 2022.

Ahead of her debut as Ruby, she said that she was "beyond honoured" and said the role was a "dream come true".

“I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me,” she said.

Ncuti also took a moment to share his thoughts on Millie: "Millie is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot wait to sail the universe with Millie.”

Showrunner Russell also shared his thoughts on Millie joining the gang.

“It’s the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent. As a Coronation Street fan, I’ve seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday.”

Ncuti's next companion Varada has already started filming at the studios in Cardiff.
