Jon, 54, had been missing from the iconic red sofa for the past two days, with no explanation for his disappearance.

Instead BBC Breakfast regular Ben Thompson was drafted in to co-host the show with Sally, 53.

But while father-of-three Jon was delighted to be back presenting, viewers were more concerned with the show's format.

Taking to social media, fans raged how the show was becoming 'like Blue Peter' over its segments.

During the episode they were live from London as John Maguire attempted to scale the London Eye to paint it.

Sally and Jon also covered how a Jack Russell puppy called Amari was left with her head stuck in a metal bin lid.

Taking to social media, one fan said: "#bbcbreakfast going full on #bluepeter with the ginger bloke painting the London Eye…."

A second wrote: "Fascinating stuff live on #BluePeter I mean #BBCBreakfast."

"Please editors can you find more positive news? The steady drip feeding of sadness is driving me to watch GMB or even Everybody loves Raymond," said a third.

While a fourth commented: "#bbcbreakfast is fast turning into Blue Peter..... John (Noakes) Maguire is painting the London Eye...... someone get him a dog."

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
