Apalachee High School on lockdown over active shooter fears in Georgia as cops swarm campus in Barrow County
APALACHEE High School in Georgia has been swarmed by dozens of cops after a shooting on campus.
The school in Barrow County — 58 miles northeast of Atlanta — is on lockdown and police reported multiple casualties.
Barrow County Sherrif's Department also said they have one suspect in custody.
At least one person was seen being loaded onto a stretcher outside and flown to the hospital.
Apalachee High School has about 1,900 students and is one of two high schools in the Burrow County school district.
It has been a little over a month since students returned from summer break.
Heavily armed cops and SWAT vehicles surrounded the school on Wednesday morning after students were evacuated and seen rushing into their parent's arms.
Parents started to share worried posts on social media about an active shooter at the school.
In a livestream of the school from the outlet, a helicopter landed in the middle of the school lawn and then took off.
Dozens of cops from different agencies drove their cars onto the lawn of the school.
There were also at least a dozen ambulances and firetrucks.
FBI Atlanta said they were aware of the incident and its "agents are on scene" helping law enforcement.
Students and staff flooded the bleachers of the football stadium as the school was evacuated at 11:33 am.
Another helicopter flew around the school as students stood in the stadium.
Large armed groups of cops stood on the lawn while others started to approach the school.
Buses are available for students who need transportation home.
The governor of Georgia Brian Kemp released a statement about the shooting on X.
"I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state," he wrote.
"We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation."
