The longest night and the shortest day of winter expected in Ashgabat

In the coming days, on December 21 and 22, the winter solstice is expected to occur worldwide, when the Sun will be at its lowest point in the sky, resulting in the longest night and the shortest day of the year.

In Ashgabat, the winter solstice will take place on December 21: the duration of the shortest day this year will be 9 hours and 31 minutes, while the longest night will last 14 hours and 28 minutes.

The solstice occurs twice a year — in summer and winter. During the summer solstice, which took place in the Turkmen capital on June 21, the longest day of 2024 lasted 14 hours and 47 minutes, while the shortest night lasted only 9 hours and 12 minutes.
