Manchester United and Real Madrid are tipped to battle it out for Argentina Under-20midfielder Federico Redondo.
TeamTalk suggest Liverpool too could be keen on the Argentinos Juniors star, 20.
United have had a problem filling the defensive midfield role, with Casemiro suffering from injuries and Sofyan Amrabat struggling since his summer loan arrival.
It's claimed Redondo might be available in the summer - for around £8million.
Manager Erik ten Hag has been rightly hammered for his terrible moves in the transfer market, most notably winger Antony (£85.5m) midfielder Casemiro (£70m) and keeper Andre Onana (47.2m).
England midfielder Mason Mount (£60m) has been hit with injuries and £72m forward Rasmus Hojlund is a raw talent.
Even so, former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must still take a huge amount of blame for his own poor signings — and United are still paying the price. On top of Van de Beek, the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the return of Cristiano Ronaldo were all signed off by the Norwegian.
However, back at United and you would still rate Ten Hag’s record in the transfer market — considering the sums spent — worse than Solskjaer’s.
There has also been alarm over his agent, Kees Vos, and his growing involvement in transfers at the club. Vos’ Sports Entertainment Group represent Hojlund, who joined the agency a month before the United deal went through.
They also acted on behalf of United during negotiations to bring Sofyan Amrabat on loan from Fiorentina. Equally, SunSport understands that SEG have ruffled the feathers of the agents of some of United’s younger players in the academy.
Arsenal face competition from Chelsea and Tottenham, though, with Toney reportedly valued at £100million by the Bees.
A deal worth that amount would see both Newcastle and League One Peterborough pocket millions thanks to their sell-on clauses.
According to Sky Sports, Posh have a 30 per cent clause included in the £5million deal that took Toney to Brentford in 2020.
Meanwhile, Newcastle would receive 30 per cent of that amount after selling the forward to Peterborough two years earlier.
Those clauses would see Darren Ferguson's side receive £30million if Toney is sold for £100million, with the Magpies then cashing £9million from that figure.
Newcastle previously received £1.5million from Toney's 2018 move to Brentford.
It leaves United looking to offload the England star, and according to Sky Sports in Germany, Dortmund are in talks to re-sign Sancho – while West ham have also been linked.
The two clubs are back in negotiations for a loan deal with Dortmund paying a fee and United helping to cover his £350,000-per-week wages.
Sancho is believed to be pushing for a return to Germany, where made 137 appearances with 50 goals.
And he could be at Dortmund’s training base as early as this week.
Chelsea prepared to let Chalobah go
Trevor Chalobah may yet leave Chelsea this month despite his injury woes.
The centre back - previously linked to Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund - has yet to play this season amid a nagging hamstring problem.
But Chalobah, 24, is nearing fitness - meaning there is still a chance a deal could be struck for him to get a fresh start away from Stamford Bridge.
However, he suffered a setback to his hamstring problem in October and is being cautious about pushing himself too hard to come back.
But with the transfer window open now there is hope he will be fit in time in order to get a move away - most likely a loan with a view to a permanent transfer.
Atalanta have launched a swoop for Birmingham's Jordan James.
Reports in Italy claim the Serie A club have made an opening bid of £3.9million plus bonuses for the Wales midfielder.
SunSport previously revealed fellow Italian clubs Bologna and Lecce as well as Everton, Blackburn and Leicester have all been interested in rising star James, 19, who has impressed for club and country this season.
Highly-rated youngster James went to the World Cup last year with Robert Page's Wales squad as an extra man for the experience and then won his first cap in March.
James has made 24 Championship appearances for Birmingham this term as well as the eight-cap Welshman establishing himself at international level which have included excellent performances against Croatia and Turkey.
Atalanta, under the guidance of sporting director Lee Congerton, formerly of Leicester and Liverpool, have been scouting the British market for potential bargains and upcoming talent.
Now the Italians could take advantage of the uncertainty at Birmingham after manager Wayne Rooney was sacked on Tuesday.
EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea are eyeing a move for Benfica defender Antonio Silva after scouting the Manchester United defender for several weeks, write CIARAN WISEMAN and STEVE BRENNER.
The Blues watched the Portugal star, 20, during a3-0 win over Famalicao on Friday, having been scouted by the club for several weeks.
SunSport understand that the West London club see Silva as a potential new pillar in their defence.
Recent signings Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have failed to establish themselves since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, veteran defender Thiago Silva will turn 40 next season and could still leave when his contract expires in the summer.
Birmingham City will approach Steve Cooper as their first port of call after sacking Wayne Rooney.
However, the Championship strugglers accept it is likely to be a short conversation and they face an uphill battle to convince the former Nottingham Forest boss to turn his back on a possible rapid return to the Premier League.
Blues CEO Garry Cook dusted himself down yesterday and started the recruiting process - again - 13 weeks after he pinned his hopes on Rooney.
A call to Welshman Cooper heads his 'To do list' after the Roo Revolution bombed spectacularly.
Ralph Hasenhuttl, Reims head coach Will Still, Jesse Marsch, Paul Heckingbottom and England Under-21 head coach Lee Carsley are also being considered.
Liverpool have recalled Dundee loanee Owen Beck to help solve their left-back crisis.
Boss Jurgen Klopp is without first-choice Andy Robertson plus Kostas Tsimikas through injury.
Scotland captain Robertson is not expected to return this month following the dislocated shoulder he sustained against Spain in October.
Greece defender Tsimikas also faces a lengthy spell out after he suffered a broken collarbone in a freak collision in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal on December 23.
That has persuaded Liverpool boss Klopp to cut short Beck’s season-long loan north of the border.
Beck, 21, played 20 times and scored twice for the Scottish Premiership side this season and won a debut Wales call-up from Robert Page in October.
The Under-21 defender was on the bench for the friendly against Gibraltar in Wrexham but failed to come on.
A Dundee statement read: “Owen has been outstanding on and off the field. We would like to thank him for all he has given and wish him all the very best for the future. Owen will always be welcomed back in Dundee.”
Raphael Varane is poised to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer - but how do his stats compare with fellow Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.
Since the start of 2021-22, the Frenchman has played 79 for United, compared to Maguire's 85.
He has registered a higher percentage of passing accuracy, more clearances, a higher rate of aerial success and a higher rate of duel success than his United counterpart.
Varane has also conceded fewer fouls and fewer goals than the England international at club level.
He has made NO errors leading to goals, while Maguire has made two.
However, the ex-Leicester hero stands out in some key areas.
The £80million man has made more tackles, more interceptions and has won possession more times than his French team-mate.
And most importantly, Maguire has a better win percentage with 59% compared to Varane's 53%.
