M4 CLOSED for emergency repairs after huge overnight blaze with ‘severe delays’ sparking chaos for commuters
THE M4 has been shut for emergency repairs after a huge overnight blaze, sparking chaos for commuters.
Two lanes have been closed for servicing, while queues have built up between Junction 13 and 14, just east of Swindon.
Severe delays on M4 Westbound between J13 A34 (Chieveley/Newbury) and J14 A338 (Hungerford) have been reported, with cars moving at an average speed of five miles per hour.
Lanes 2 and 3 on the M4 near Newbury remain closed following damage to the road surface from a vehicle fire.
The blaze is believed to have erupted in the early hours of Thursday morning, causing enormous damage to two of lanes on the M4 heading from Newbury into Swindon.
Motorists are warned of delays of up to 30minutes, as photographs taken by the National Highways show extensive queues on the motorway.

National Highways said: "Lanes 2 and 3 remain CLOSED on the #M4 westbound between #J13 and J14 near #Newbury for emergency resurfacing following an earlier vehicle fire. Thanks for your patience."
More delays have also been reported at the busy junction that joins the M4 with the A470 in Cardiff following a collision.
Emergency services were called to the scene earlier this morning and one lane has since been blocked causing growing traffic in the area.
Traffic Wales said: "M4 Westbound J32 Coryton on slip. Lane 2 closed."
Elsewhere, police were called to another crash on the B4280 Heol Spencer, Coity, Bridgend junction with A4061 Blackmill Rd, Bryncethin.
South Wales Police have warned drivers of long delays.
