‘M&S is cheaper than Asda?’ Shoppers rave about posh supermarket where ‘quality’s better’ & you save money on essentials

M&S has gone a major overhaul in recent years, with the department store going viral for it's designer skincare and fashion dupes.

Whilst you might be checking out more than just cosy sweaters, you might also want to consider your weekly shop too - with prices that rival even Asda.

Though you might you have to drive miles to bag your groceries, Marks and Spencer might just have what you are looking for on the high street.

Like other supermarkets, the British department store has begun to compare and lower prices as it tries compete with other rivals.

Whilst it isn’t most people’s destination for their weekly food shop, the retailer shared some of the tempting treats on offer.

Meat is one of the priciest products at the checkout, but you wouldn’t into the Bognor Regis branch as it showed off a 10 pack of bacon for just £2.80.

Asda's Extra Special pack of 8 bacon rashers is £3.25 for two for £5 currently.

Similarly, a packet of 10 meatballs will cost you £3 in store with chicken thighs and eight pork sausages costing less than £2 each.

On the other hand, Asda's eight-pack of Flavourful Pork Sausages will set you back £2.25.

These weren’t the only essentials on offer though, with plenty of vegetables to bulk out your meals.

Making the switch to M&S could save you money as well as save the environment, as loose onions were just 25p each.

Large bags of staples like pasta and potatoes could also be found in the retailers ‘value’ range’, with both items costing a £1 or less.

Asda's pasta however is priced at 75p for a 500g bag.

Even pets could fill their bellies, with treat sticks for dogs also price matched to just £1 in the recent Tiktok.

It seems the department store won’t stay the underdog for long, with the video being made in response to a user’s comment about the prices.

Clearly shocked by how much they could save, they wrote: “How is this cheaper than my local Asda?”

However, other savvy shoppers have already made the switch with another adding: “I started three months ago shopping at M&S cut my groceries in half and saving a fortune.”

A third also said: “The chicken is amazing from M&S. £1.50 and I always buy it.”

Some still weren’t so convinced though, with user complaining that they struggled to just get the basics in M&S.

“It's got a lot cheaper than some supermarkets but I can't help myself with the nice bits and then I end up paying a fortune,” joked another bargain hunter.

Which? compares the prices of supermarket staples every month.

Aldi was the cheapest supermarket for a basket of groceries every month in 2023 except October, when Lidl narrowly overtook it to claim the title.

For a trolley of goods - in which Aldi and Lidl aren't included in due to their smaller product ranges - Asda was named the cheapest supermarket by Which? last year apart from one month.
