Microsoft’s AI deal with France’s Mistral faces EU scrutiny
"The Commission is looking into agreements that have been concluded between large digital market players and generative AI developers and providers," said European Commission spokesperson Lea Zuber. "In this context, we have received the mentioned agreement, which we will analyze."
Microsoft is already under scrutiny for its existing links with ChatGPT maker OpenAI. In January, the European Commission said it was considering reviewing the partnership, as questions grew around competition in the white-hot field of generative AI.
The United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is also reviewing Microsoft's ties to OpenAI, opening a merger inquiry in December. The regulator is looking at whether the partnership has resulted in an "acquisition of control," where one party has de facto control, or more than 50 percent of the voting rights, over another.
