I’m worried my daughter will get bullied for her name & want to change it – I’ll sound like a chain smoker otherwise
FROM traditional monikers to something a little more unique, baby names are always going to be a topic of controversy.
The only thing that really matters is that you, the parent likes it.
However, one new mum has expressed her worry after giving her one-week-old daughter a name that she instantly regrets...after realising it makes her sound like a chain smoker.
In a Reddit thread shared online, the worried woman pleaded for "reassurance" on her daughter's name, which she revealed is 'Sigrid.'
She then explained how she and her husband "struggled" choosing a name, adding that they both had a favourite the other didn't like - hers being Ottilie and his Aubrey.
"Etta was our compromise name, but he soon went off it after birth," she continued.

"He mentioned Sigrid and I thought I liked it and agreed.
"Now I’m worried she will get bullied for it sounding like cigarette."
The concerned mother went on to say that her husband loves the nickname Ziggy or Siggy, before questioning whether 'Sisi' (pronounced Ceecee) could work.

She concluded: "Also we’re not Scandinavian, although we both look it and husband has Danish heritage a couple of generations back.
"I like Beatrix and he may be willing to change it."
The post has since been flooded with comments from social forum users, with very mixed reviews.
"'Siggy' is short for 'cigarette' so don't do that," wrote one.
"I like Etta and Aubrey way better, but Sigrid is a fine name. I agree that the English pronunciation does sound a bit like cigarette though," a second agreed.
A third commented: "Honestly it sounds very much like cigarette to me. How about Ingrid? Maybe Iggy as the nn?"
Meanwhile, a fourth noted: "I was like 'this is completely fine' until you said you're not Scandinavian. That's a bit weird. Also, 'Siggy' is short for 'cigarette' so don't do that."
Elsewhere, others tried their best to reassure the concerned mother that she should stick by her choice of name.
"I knew a Sigrid and nobody ever made that joke about her," one person penned.
"I love it! Sigrid has been on my list for years and I’ve never thought of it being close to cigarette. Sisi, Ziggy, or Siggi would all be great nicknames!" noted another.

A further chimed in: "I like Sigrid and cigarette really wouldn't occur to me as something to tease about. Sisi pronounced Ceecee could totally work."
And one more added: "My grandma is called Sigrid (German here). It’s a great solid name and it means 'beautiful victory' which is a plus."
