At least 178 people were killed and 589 injured in Gaza on the first day of resumed fighting between Israel and Hamas, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Humanitarian operations in the Strip “largely halted” after a week-long pause in fighting allowed increased deliveries of food, water, medical supplies and fuel, the U.N. humanitarian affairs office said. The seven-day pause in fighting, which enabled hostages in Gaza to be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel, came to an end early Friday. Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, said Saturday that the IDF was “preparing for the next stage — southern Gaza.” About 950,000 Gazans are registered at U.N. shelters in the south.

Hamas freed 81 Israeli women and children, including some dual citizens, and 24 foreign nationals during the pause. It continues to hold more than 130 hostages in Gaza, according to the IDF.
Israel returned about 240 Palestinian women and teenagers from Israeli jails to the occupied West Bank during the pause. It has detained about 160 in the West Bank in the past six days, among more than 3,000 held since Oct. 7, many “without being presented direct evidence of an offense,” according to the U.N. humanitarian affairs office.
More than 13,300 people have been killed in Gaza and 35,180 wounded since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The toll is incomplete because it doesn’t include the latest casualties, and health officials can’t tally the dead at two of the enclave’s hospitals or account for bodies under the rubble. At least 1,200 people were killed in Israel during the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.
