Brenda, 77, has played DCI Vera Stanhope in the ITV detective drama since 2011.

She initially panicked fans when she said there were no more episodes of the series in the pipeline after the recently released series 13. However, she later confirmed that it was “not the last” viewers have seen of Vera

Vera will return

Brenda has now given another update on the future of Vera and it is a welcome relief for ITV fans.

The update came while she shared a heartfelt message with a young, injured fan.

Brenda has shared a tweet about her recent charity work, writing: “So proud to have opened Shooting Stars Charity Shop in high st Godalming today. Staff delightful, and thanks to the many VERA fans who attended. Much appreciated by me and the charity.”

One of her fans replied to the tweet on behalf of her son,

“My 11yr old son is a HUGE fan of Vera and yourself (as am I). He broke his arm in two places recently, and although in pain, has not moaned once. I don’t suppose you could say a quick hello to him. He’d be so chuffed,” they wrote alongside a picture of their son Harry.

Brenda, who regularly interacts with her fans on X, formerly Twitter, was quick to reply to the message.

She wrote: “Hello Harry, hope your arm mends very soon. Thank you for watching VERA - its fans like you who keep the programme going. Thank you.”

Brenda also shared details of the upcoming filming schedule for Vera to lift Harry’s spirits.

“I’ll be making a couple more episodes later in the year, which you’ll be able to watch next year. Very best wishes Harry from Brenda. aka Vera,” she added.

The grateful parent then replied: “Thank you so much. I can’t wait for Harry to finish school so I can show him this. We all think you’re amazing.”

Along with the exciting news that series 14 of Vera will be filming later this year, ITV confirmed that the new series will consist of two episodes which are expected on screens early next year.

Brenda’s role in the upcoming period comedy Fools, which was announced earlier this month, did spark concerns that filming on Vera would be pushed. However, no filming schedule for the movie has been announced, so it is more likely to take place after Vera.

What is Fools about?

Fools is a period comedy about Mary Tutor, who will be played by Guardians of the Galaxy alum Karen Gillan.

The movie follows the 16th-century English Queen and depicts the little-known story of her friendship with her female court jester Jane (Patsy Ferran).

Who is starring in Fools?

Who will the Vera actress co-star alongside?

  • Karen Gillan as Mary Tudor.
  • Jim Broadbent as Cardinal Pole.
  • Patsy Ferran as Jane Foole.
  • Brenda Blethyn's character is yet to be revealed.

According to the official synopsis, the usually humourless queen finds Jane’s slapstick routines hilariously funny and they strike up a genuine friendship.

The movie won’t be without its drama, though. It is set in 1553, when Mary inherits the throne from her father, Henry VIII.

Henry VIII’s death left the nations divided and the ambitious Cardinal Pole (played by Jim Broadbent) is plotting to usurp the throne from Mary.

However, he has overlooked Jane, who “becomes an unlikely stumbling block.”
