Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han on Friday declined to reveal further details, citing privacy concerns.

“The Social Welfare Department needs to do its job of monitoring and supervision thoroughly. The warning letters were for the individual homes on their suspected violation of rules or insufficiencies,” Sun said, adding such warnings could raise the sector’s awareness and improve their services.

“But the public needs to understand that the warnings made public couldn’t be too detailed as they involve the privacy [of the residents],” he said.

Checks by the Post of the social welfare authority’s website, which monitors the practices of care homes’, showed that warnings to the five care homes were issued this September and August, and last December, respectively. But few details of the cases were disclosed.
