Toyah, who starred in 1979 cult movie Quadrophenia alongside pop star Sting and actors Ray Winstone and Leslie Ash, has some dance experience from performing her signature jolty dance moves on stage.

When asked in April if she would be up for taking part in the show, Toyah said: “Oh, God yeah. Well, I’d have to do it sooner rather than later, because I’m not going to be able to move like that in two years’ time.

“I do understand how hard they work. I’m friends with Angela Rippon and she was extraordinary.”

She added: “But they’re rehearsing 10 hours a day every day. And then on Saturday, they do two shows. As I went there, they invited me to watch them do the live show. Then at nine o’clock, they film the Sunday show, and I’m thinking, ‘Could I do this?’

“But, you know, the whole world wants to do Strictly, I wouldn’t say no.”

Last weekend the Sun on Sunday revealed that the blind comedian Chris McCausland, 46, had signed up to star in this year’s series in a new first for the BBC1 competition TV show.

Other celebs in the frame include Nicola Roberts, Olympic cycle star Laura Kenny, Gladiators’ hunk Nitro and Bank of Dave star, Dave Fishwick.

Toyah has been married to King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp, 78, for 38 years.

Speaking about the secret to their successful relationship she said: “We’re successful because we’re both independent and I’m wealthier than him. If I wasn’t, I really wouldn’t be able to handle it and he likes that.”
