Cuthbert cake lovers have been offered a treat before next week's festivities as Aldi has unveiled a new spruced up chocolate version.

The edible caterpillar has been spotted with a green bow tie and sprinkles to add to the December cheer.

Sweet tooth fans have the chance to nab the 605 gram cake for just £6.49.

That's a remarkable saving of £8.51 compared to M&S' Sleigh Ride Colin which has been advertised online for £15.

Savvy shoppers will want to keep their eyes peeled when heading to their local Aldi, as the chocolate sponge has been filled with buttercream and enrobed in milk chocolate too.

Perfect for sharing with friends and family, the cake suggests it can serve 12 and is even vegetarian.

The online shop suggests the limited edition food item is only available while stocks last and so interested buyers may want to get their hands on one before they run out.

Christmas Cuthbert is just one of many festive bites that the supermarket giant has on offer.

This year's range of decorative goodies also includes a pack of six Specially Selected Mince Pie Cheesecake Bites for £3.49, which are also available in Chocolate & Caramel flavour.

Many have flocked to social media describing the "Christmas upgrade" for the Caterpillar regular that usually sits on shelves.

One user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Great to see him make his annual appearance again this year."

Another put: "jingle Bells, Cuthbert sells, Colin flew away, oh what fun it is to shop at Aldi everyday, hey."

Someone else said: "Succumbed to marksandspencer's Christmas Colin the Caterpillar.

"Sorry I feel bad I haven't bought an AldiUK Cuthbert (which tastes better) but I haven't been near an Aldi."

Even the account for Aldi Stores UK has fun with the new arrival in stores.

They posted "Christmas Cuthbert - please don't sue." and "Cuthbert Christmas has a ring to it" back in November.

How to save money on chocolate

We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar.

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs...

Go own brand - if you're not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you'll save by going for the supermarket's own brand bars.

Shop around - if you've spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it's cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like Trolley.co.uk let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you're getting the best deal.

Look out for yellow stickers - supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they've been reduced.

They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged.

Buy bigger bars - most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar.

So if you've got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.
