Who was Ian Lavender?

Ian Lavender was an English stage, film and television actor.

He was born and raised in Birmingham and spent his time in local theatre groups.

He attended the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, in which alumni include Olivia Colman and Jeremy Irons.

In 1968, The Dad's Army star, best known as the young Private Pike, was cast in the sitcom at the age of 22.

Ian quickly became a household name and starred in the series from 1968 to 1977.

Following this, he went on to have a successful acting career, with many fans knowing him from his time in EastEnders.

Ian joined the BBC One soap in 2001 as Derek Harkinson, a gay friend of Pauline Fowler.

The actor featured in over 200 episodes and later made a guest appearance on Albert Square in 2016.

In 2017, he appeared in his last episode before it was announced that he would not be returning to the show.

This would be the last time Ian ever made a TV appearance.

In recognition of his contributions to acting and the city he was raised in, Ian was awarded a star on the Birmingham Walk of Stars in June 2015.

On February 5, 2024, it was announced by The Dad's Army's social media account that Ian had passed away on February 2.

A post read: "We are deeply saddened to hear the passing of the wonderful, Ian Lavender.

"In what truly marks the end of an era, Ian was the last surviving member of the Dad’s Army main cast."

The statement added: "His wonderful performance as Private Frank Pike will live on for decades to come.

"We will dedicate this year’s tour to his memory.

"Our thoughts and love are with Ian’s wonderful wife Miki, their family and close friends."

How many times was Ian Lavender married?

Ian was married twice throughout his life.

He was previously married to fellow actor Sue Kerchiss from 1967 until their divorce in 1973.

In 1993, he received a diagnosis of bladder cancer, just six days before marrying his second wife, Miki Hardy.

On his diagnosis, Ian said in an interview the same year: "We had been living together for 16 years and it was something I should have done a long time before, these things change you, they help you to see what is important in life."

How many children did Ian Lavender have?

Ian had two sons called Sam and Daniel from his first marriage.

He also had two granddaughters.

Speaking about being a dad, Ian told The Guardian in 2014: "It’s been lovely watching my two sons grow up and become such amazing people, despite life’s vicissitudes.

"They are special people. There’s an awful lot of theory now regarding bringing up children with DVDs, books and internet sites all offering advice.

"None of that existed when my parents were raising Paul and me.

"They just had to get on with it and do the best they could, and they did a great job."

Sam has been an executive producer at Motion Pictures for the last four years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He attended the University of Oxford in 1994 and gained a degree in English.

He then went on to study for a master's in film studies at Birbeck University in London.

Meanwhile, Daniel is a look development lead at Song Pictures Imageworks in Canada.
