UK inflation unexpectedly holds steady at 6.7% amid rising fuel prices
UK inflation unexpectedly held steady in September at 6.7% as hard-pressed households came under pressure from soaring fuel prices.
The Office for National Statistics said the annual inflation rate as measured by the consumer prices index remained unchanged from August’s reading, halting months of progress towards easing the pressure on households.
Raising questions over the Bank of England’s next decision on interest rates in November, the reading confounded the predictions of City economists for a modest fall to 6.6%.
After the latest reading, inflation is still well above the Bank’s 2% target.
