Car expert reveals five 80s hatchback brands that are surging in value with enthusiasts ready to pay £1,000s

A MOTOR expert has revealed five hatchback brands that are surging in price - with collectors ready to pay thousands for them.

The classic hatchbacks were wallet-friendly for wannabe racers who couldn't afford a sports car.

The new valuations of the old cars come from motor expert John Mayhead, editor of the Hagerty UK Price Guide - which specialises in pricing up classic motors.

The cars are all from the 1980s and include famous hatchbacks from Ford, Renault, Volkswagen and Peugeot while each brand forms part of the top-five that have increased in value.

As reported by This Is Money, John, said: "These cars are the ones that every car enthusiast who grew up in the 1970s and 80s wanted."

Ford still takes the cake in terms of value over the others, as Mayhead notes that the nostalgic cars are edging ahead after his team tracked the value of them over the last five years.

According to the motor expert, Ford's Fiesta XR2 is one of the most attainable motors out of hat, with the firm's classic motors rising by around 31.9 per cent in value as a whole.

The XR2 is so rare that there's only one available on AutoTrader right now, costing £10,500 with just under 100,000 miles on the clock.

Coming in at a close second is Renault, with the 5 Turbo and Clio Williams which rose by 28.9 percent, beating German firm Audi by just over 1 per cent.

Volkswagen's Golf GTI and Rallye are the fourth most valuable currently, the motors went up in value by 19.7 per cent.

While Peugeot's 205 GTi rose by 5.2 per cent.

Which firm's high-performance classic motors cost the most?

The leaderboard for which car company's classics are valued the highest was completed by Hagerty UK Price Guide, which showed a clear winner amongst five different firms over the past five years.

1. Ford - 31.9 per cent

2. Renault - 28.9 per cent

3. Audi - 27.6 per cent

4. Volkswagen - 19.7 per cent

5. Peugeot 5.2 per cent

All four brands are popular firm's in the UK yet some of the cars mentioned seem to sell for a higher price in their home country.

French auction house Aguttes sold a Renault 5 GT Turbo for £35,500, which is more than double the guide price for the same exact motor set by Hagerty at £15,500.

Auction houses usually stock some of the rarer cars motorists are looking for and collectible cars often pop up for sale both in the UK and overseas.

Just last week a rare single-toned Bugatti went up for sale for almost £500,000 more than it was first bought years before.

And what makes the car even more interesting is it was first owned by a music mogul often seen on UK screens.

And, a Formula 1 legend's personal motor has been put up for sale - but motorheads will have to part with a hefty sum to own it.

The 1972 Lotus even comes with a bonus gift of a photo of the racing icon standing next to it outside his home.
