Welsh Open snooker 2025 LIVE RESULTS: Mark Selby BEATS Stephen Maguire to take home £100k jackpot in Llandudno

  • Welsh Open makes itself home

One thing all the players have spoken about this week is how much they have enjoyed the location and the crowds.

Venue Cymru in Llandudno, many hope, will be the long-standing home of the Welsh Open moving forward.

Hosting a ranking event is a big deal for the locals, proud to have the biggest Welsh snooker tournament on their doorstep.

  • Champion a gracious winner

Speaking with BBC Sport after picking up his Welsh Open title, Selby spoke about what the victory meant to him:

Obviously I'm delighted. It's great to see Stephen back in finals, four years is way too long, he's a class act and I'm one of his biggest fans. This week I won a lot of key frames when I've been 40 or 50 points behind, that's been the difference.

  • Selby continues impressive start

Mark Selby has now won three ranking titles this season.

He stepped up to the plate when he needed it most in this final, after having missed a simple pot to gift Stephen Maguire the frame to draw level before the interval.

In the final session, he seemed to take it up a gear and his opponent had no answer as victory seemed imminent.

  • Maguire dejected in defeat

Speaking with BBC Sport after his defeat, you could see that Stephen Maguire was disappointed with his game today.

While his opponent was full of compliments, often we are our own worst critics and there was no doubt the Scot was beating himself up for many of errors this evening.

Playing in his first ranking final for five years, it is obvious to see that Maguire was hoping for a more positive outcome today.

  • Selby shows true form

Mark Selby got his hands on the Ray Reardon Trophy for the second time in his playing career this evening.

He had some gruelling matches against the likes of John Higgins to book his place in today's final.

Accompanied by his wife and daughter, Leicester's finest was delighted with his performances this week and finally getting his hands on the trophy once again.

  • Jester from Leicester scoops title

Mark Selby was a deserving champion in Llandudno.

He just could not shake off Stephen Maguire in this final, despite the Scot never holding a lead.

The final mid-session interval seemed to be the turning point for Selby as he just went from strength to strength.

His cueing and potting just seemed to take the fight out of his opponent.

Mark Selby becomes the Welsh Open champion for the second time.

  • Mark Selby beats Stephen Maguire 9-6

  • Mark Selby* 8-6 Stephen Maguire (37-0)

Selby plays a superb cut into the middle from a safety shot Maguire left him in.

He gets lucky as the cue ball rattles in the jaw of the bottom pocket and leaves him with a pink into the middle.

It is almost as if the reality of the pot puts him within touching distance of victory and misses.

Maguire then gets his position all wrong potting a red and misses the thin cut on the black.

Selby allows him another chance but as he rattles the pot it double kisses the cue ball and leaves an easy pot.

He seems to have checked out mentally now and knows defeat is imminent.

  • Mark Selby* 8-6 Stephen Maguire (36-0)

Mark Selby is really in his groove now and looking to see this match out.

He manages a break of 36 but is unfortunate when he runs out of options.

Opting to play safe with his next shot, to ensure he does not allow Maguire the chance to spend any time at the table.

  • Mark Selby 8-6 Stephen Maguire

A superb break of 128 seals the frame for Mark Selby.

He even sinks a trebled pink into the middle of the centre pocket.

That is the first century break of this final as Selby moves to within one frame of victory.

It seems a long way back for Maguire from here.

  • Mark Selby* 7-6 Stephen Maguire (53-0)

Selby is in a strong position to close out this frame.

With only 83 remaining, he looks like he plans to clear the table.

Maguire can only sit and watch and mull over his missed red.

  • Mark Selby* 7-6 Stephen Maguire (15-0)

Once again Maguire misses a pot that proves costly.

Selby is potting and cueing well and has the chance to punish his opponent.

Maguire may not get a chance to return to the table in this frame.

  • Mark Selby 7-6 Stephen Maguire

Once again Selby takes the lead in the final.

He seized upon the mistake from Maguire and saw the frame out.

That will help his confidence, having had too many breaks come to an end with a loose shot.

  • Mark Selby 6-6 Stephen Maguire (20-0)

This is certainly not an open free-flowing snooker match.

Another loose shot from Maguire gives an opening to Selby.

He needs to keep his head about him from here to try and get himself into a frame-winning position.

  • Mark Selby 6-6 Stephen Maguire (12-0)

This is looking like it could be a very drawn out frame.

Selby adds a few points before using being on a colour to snooker Maguire.

The Scot commits two fouls before finally making contact with the reds on the top cushion.

With the ball touching, it is an easy out for Selby.

  • Mark Selby 6-6 Stephen Maguire (0-0)

The players are back out and play resumes.

No more intervals, now we play until we have a winner.

Selby misses a long pot after Maguire's break leaves a few loose reds.

The pair resort to exchanging safety play, not wanting to make the mistake to leave an opening for their opponent.

  • Mark Selby 6-6 Stephen Maguire

We have a real game on our hands here.

It is crazy to think that Stephen Maguire has not once led in this match so far today.

That said, Mark Selby just cannot shake him off.

  • Mark Selby 6-6 Stephen Maguire

Maguire clinches the frame without even needing to sink the black.

That was some break from 60-0 down.

Selby heads into the interval rueing that simple red he missed.

  • Mark Selby 6-5 Stephen Maguire* (60-60)

Maguire is showing his temprament in this frame.

This was all done and dusted for Selby but he took his eye off the ball on a pot he took for granted.

Maguire is a few balls away from clinching the frame.

  • Mark Selby 6-5 Stephen Maguire* (60-0)

    Wow.

It looked like the frame was all sealed for Selby but he misses such a simple straight pot into the bottom pocket.

Maguire comes back to the table, something he was certainly not expecting.

He is 60 behind with 84 left, a big ask but very doable if he can get his head in the zone.

  • Mark Selby* 6-5 Stephen Maguire (30-0)

Selby has a big opening to put himself in a commanding position.

It is not going to be easy, he will need some good cue ball control to open the pack of reds up shortly.

For now, he can pick off the loose reds and build himself a lead in the frame.

  • Mark Selby* 6-5 Stephen Maguire (0-0)

The last frame before the mid-session interval now.

It has already started as quite the tactical battle with both players looking to leave their opponent safe.

Maguire is the first to crack and has left Selby with the chance of a long pot.

  • Mark Selby 6-5 Stephen Maguire

Maguire takes on a bold pot and misses, leaving an easy red.

He calls the frame and Selby moves into the lead once again.

This is a really tense affair at Venue Cymru.

  • Mark Selby 5-5 Stephen Maguire (67-7)

It is not quite the break that Selby wanted.

He leaves Maguire requiring one snooker, more than doable.

Now we head back into the dance of safety play.
