THE eyes are sometimes called "the windows to the soul," which can cramp anyone's style if they're looking too tired.

One New York City optometrist spilled the details on how to keep the delicate under-eye appearing perky and youthful.

Dr. Jennifer Tsai, O.D., optometrist and founder of Line of Sight Vision, spoke exclusively with The U.S. Sun on how to keep peepers in their best shape.

THROWING SHADE

First, she recommended shading the eyes away from harmful rays that could lead to premature aging and serious health issues.

"Protect from UV rays," she said.

"Sun exposure can accelerate damage to the skin around the eyes, but also increase the chances of eye conditions like cataracts or macular degeneration."

According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), investing in sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat can help keep your orbs in good health.

LIKE A DUCK TO WATER

"Keep your eyelids hydrated," she said for her second tip. "The eyelid skin can be the first place to show signs of sagging."

For those looking for optically-friendly products with "firming" properties, Dr. Tsai laid out which ingredients to look out for.

"Ingredients that include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and eyebright are great," she said.

The Lumify Eye Illuminations Hydra-Gel Brightening Eye Cream contains all three and is available from Target for $26.49.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

Dr. Tsai gave yet another free piece of advice to nip pesky eye bags in the bud.

Budget-friendly ways to cover up dark circles and under-eye wrinkles

"Maintain a healthy lifestyle," she said.

"Eye and skin health are often related. A diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omegas help support overall eye and skin health.

"Reducing alcohol intake and staying hydrated helps with undereye bags and dark circles.

"Lastly, getting enough sleep helps your eyes look rejuvenated."

WASH OFF THE DAY

Beauty lovers and the like should also pay extra attention to hygiene to keep eyes safe.

"Remove makeup gently," she said.

"The skin around the eyes is delicate and can be sensitive to harsh ingredients or abrasive rubbing.

"Use a gentle cleaner and makeup remover with micellar water like Lumify Eye Illuminations Three-in-One Micellar Cleaning Water and a cotton pad."

The Lumify Eye Illuminations Three-in-One Micellar Cleaning Water is available from Target for $15.99.

"The eyelid margin is a common place for bacterial buildup, inflammation, and infections to occur," she said.

"Use gentle cleansers formulated for the eye area morning and night and consider eyelid wipes with tea tree oil and hypochlorous spray."

The NEI also warns that bacterial build-up in the eyelash area can cause uncomfortable conditions such as blepharitis — an inflammation of the eyelid.
