Morgan Spurlock who ate McDonald’s every day for a month for Super Size Me doc dies at age 53 as cause of death revealed
FILMMAKER Morgan Spurlock, the mastermind behind the award-winning documentary Super Size Me, has died at age 53.
Spurlock died in New York on Thursday from complications of cancer, his family announced on Friday.
"It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother, Morgan," the filmmaker's brother, Craig Spurlock, said.
"Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity.
"The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man.
"I am so proud to have worked together with him."
A West Virginia native, Morgan Spurlock rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his documentary Super Size Me, which he starred in.
The documentary followed Spurlock for 30 days, during which he ate McDonald's every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The film documented the drastic change in Spurlock's physical health and well-being.
To match the average American's physical activity, Spurlock exercised less during the 30-day period.
By the end of the experiment, Spurlock claimed he gained 25 pounds and suffered from depression and liver dysfunction.
The film helped explore the influence of the fast-food industry, including its poor nutrition-based meals.
The 2004 film earned Spurlock an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.
