He has been given time off school to compete at Birmingham’s NEC, where he is tipped to be a star of terrier and hound day.

Freddie — who has had Penny, now eight, by his side since he was a baby — said: “I love dog shows and I love Penny because she’s not just my dog, she’s my best friend.

“I am really looking forward to being with her in the arena.”

Freddie, of Bobbington, Staffs, was two weeks old when he first went to Crufts with his parents, who breed smooth fox terriers.

And he was just five when he qualified for Crufts last year at the first time of asking.

Friends, family and fellow terrier owners will be cheering him on when he enters the arena at 1pm.

Freddie said: “I like going for walks with Penny as they are fun and get you fresh air.

“But I like doing the dog shows and getting prizes and rosettes.”

Mother Kimberley, 34, added: “He has been given some great advice by veteran judges and best in class winners.

"He was also taught the right etiquette needed to impress the judges at Crufts.
