Last year, the role was played by a woman — Jodie Whittaker, 41.

But that was not the only big change as the Doctor and his sidekick Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate, 53, briefly met Sir Isaac Newton on their travels in Saturday’s episode.

Donna said: “Was it me or was Sir Isaac Newton hot?”

The Doctor replied: “He was, wasn’t he? SO hot.

"Is that who I am now?”

Donna added: “Well, it was never that far from the surface, I thought.”

And on Saturday, the Time Lord will reveal new feelings for long-standing foe The Toymaker.

The rival is played by gay American actor Neil Patrick Harris, 50, who is best known for appearing in US sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.

Neil also starred in Channel 4 Aids drama It’s A Sin, written by Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies, 60.

Nathaniel Curtis, 32, who played the handsome Sir Isaac Newton, was also cast in miniseries It’s A Sin.

In the next special episode, David Tennant will hand over the keys to the 15th doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, 31.

Ncuti played gay student Eric Effiong in Netflix comedy Sex Education.

The actor came out as gay in Elle magazine this year.

He said: “The work I do is what’s important.”
