When to become concerned about hair loss
According to the NHS, it’s “it’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day without noticing”.
But, when the body sheds significantly more hair every day, this is known as shedding, and the medical term for this condition is telogen effluvium.
Excessive hair shedding is common in people who have experienced any form of stress, for example childbirth, illness, a stressful or major life event, new medication or withdrawal of a hormone treatment.
A third of people diagnosed with telogen effluvium do not have a cause found.
According to the British Association of Dermatologists, “telogen effluvium usually resolves completely without any treatment over several months”.
They added: “The normal duration of telogen is approximately 100 days (three to six months) after which period the hair starts growing again.
“However, depending on the length of the hair, it may take many months for the overall hair volume to gradually return to normal.”
