What is UNIFIL, the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon?

As tensions across the Israel-Lebanon border escalate, Israeli forces have fired at several United Nations positions in the south of Lebanon this week, injuring at least four U.N. peacekeepers.

The peacekeepers belong to the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, an international interim force that has been stationed along the Lebanon-Israel border to ensure stability and security for more than 46 years.
