Brash holds nerve and leads Great Britain to gold in equestrian team jumping
Great Britain won the team showjumping gold medal after Scott Brash held his nerve on the final round to go clear.
The trio of Brash, Harry Charles and Ben Maher kept the United States at bay to be crowned Olympic champions with only two time penalties.
Maher, who won individual gold in Tokyo in 2021, was first up in the final and jumped clear with one time penalty, before Charles added a perfect round. As the final rider to go, Brash jumped clear with only one time penalty to add which was good enough to top the podium.
Both he and Maher were members of the team that secured team gold at London 2012. It is a first Olympic medal for Charles, whose father, Peter, was also in the squad 12 years ago.
After completing his clear round aboard Romeo 88, Charles said: “I’m pretty speechless, I need a good few hours to reflect. That was probably the best round of my life at the biggest moment in my career so far.
“To have me be good and Romeo come through like that on this stage and at this moment – it’s taken a lot to get to this position and I’m really proud of him.”
The hosts, France, finished in third behind the US after Julien Epaillard had one fence down in the final round.
