The gripping first instalment of Grantchester’s eighth season premiered on ITV last night. And while the focus was on the mysterious death of a young biker, it was the show’s final moments which left viewers at home on edge.

At the end of the episode, Bonnie (Charlotte Ritchie) leaves Grantchester to go and help her parents after her mum had a stroke. But she and her husband, Will (Tom Brittney), leave things on a sour note.

He quickly realises his mistake and decides to go after her, presumably to make amends, and speeds through the country lanes on his bike.

But, as he rounds a bend, he collides with a pedestrian who has just stepped out to the road. Will screams as he hits the man, who is immediately knocked unconscious, before he skids off his bike further down the road.

Will escapes the encounter unscathed, but the same can’t be said for the man he hit, who doesn’t look to be breaking.

Rushing over to help, Will cries out: “No, no, no please, oh God, wake up.”

He checks for a pulse, but before we know if he’s going to be okay, the credits begin to roll.

Having watched the scene, Grantchester viewers are convinced this will become the reason for Will’s exit, which was confirmed last year.

“So is that how Davenport leaves?” one viewer theorised on X, formerly Twitter.

“Oh no, Will, what have you done!” commented another shocked viewer.

A third said: “It doesn’t look good for Will next week!”

Tom Brittney, who plays Will, confirmed Grantchester fans are right on the money and this accident is, in fact, the start of his exit storyline.

The actor, who is departing to “focus on new projects” told Radio Times that his character is left devastated by the crash.

He said: “Everything he’s worked so hard for is gone just like that.

“It just destroys the way Will thinks of himself, because this action, whether it was an accident or on purpose, in the eyes of God and everyone else, he believes it’s unforgivable, and it really sets him down a dark path.

“Now that this thing has happened, he’s questioning whether God or anyone can ever love him again. He just shuts them out, and it pushes him further and further away from everyone to the point where we don’t know if he’s ever coming back,” he concluded.
