Israel-Hamas war updates: U.N. Security Council set to vote on resolution for increased aid in Gaza
At least 20,057 people have been killed in Gaza and 53,320 wounded since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. About 1,200 people were killed in Israel in the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. Ninety percent of people in Gaza are eating less than one meal a day, according to the World Food Program.
There are no fully functional hospitals now in northern Gaza, where only four hospitals are still functioning. Those can provide only “very limited care,” and none can operate on severely wounded patients because of shortages of supplies and workers, World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
“More journalists have been killed in the first 10 weeks of the Israel-Gaza war than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year,” according to findings by the Committee to Protect Journalists, a New York-based press freedom group that tracks the safety of journalists. At least 68 journalists have been killed in the conflict, according to CPJ.
The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, visited Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials, who have acted as intermediaries between Israel and Hamas. Israel has indicated interest in a new deal to pause fighting and release more hostages. But Hamas said Thursday that there would be no discussion of hostages until Israel halts its military action in Gaza.
