My son’s been accused of oral rape by his ex – I don’t know how to support him

DEAR DEIDRE: MY son has been accused of oral rape by his first-ever girlfriend.

He is 17 and she is 16. They were together for six months.

Two months ago he broke things off with her after they argued at a party.

He then left the sixth-form college they went to as he wasn’t happy there.

This allegation has come like a bolt from the blue, with the police turning up on our doorstep.

I don’t know how he is going to cope with an investigation.

He’s devastated and insists her allegations are untrue.

He says she is trying to get back at him for splitting up with her.

He chose to answer all the questions in the interview and gave full access to his phone, which the police have kept.

My son is bearing up quite well, considering, but I am so shocked and heartbroken for him.

I can’t believe this girl would make such wild allegations.

I don’t know how best to support him.

DEIDRE SAYS: I am so sorry this happened to your son.

Being falsely accused is so distressing and it can have a devastating impact on a young man for many years to come.

It is uncommon for a woman to make such false allegations, so any cases like this are disturbing.

The best thing you can do is make sure your son knows you are there for him.

You need support and so does he.
