BBQ fine warning

As BBQ season heats up, Brits are also being urged to check the rules before firing up the grill – or risk being slapped with hefty fines.

With around 240 accidental BBQ fires reported each year in England, councils are cracking down on unsafe or nuisance grilling.

While BBQs aren’t banned outright, excessive smoke, constant grilling, or smoke drifting onto roads could be deemed a public nuisance – and could lead to court appearances or £500 fines.

Some areas, like Islington, have designated BBQ zones, and grilling outside of these could land you with an on-the-spot penalty.

Authorities recommend wrapping things up by 9pm to avoid disturbing neighbours.

A property expert previously warned The Sun: “Barbecues can be brilliant for social events, but if not watched carefully, they can quickly get out of hand with potentially disastrous consequences.”

To stay safe – and legal – always check your local council’s guidelines before sparking up.

7 BBQ mistakes & how to fix them

GRILL master Dan Cooper from Weber has dished out his top tips to help your BBQ go off without a hitch.

  1. Failure to clean – Leftover gunk = nasty flavours. Clean grates while hot, then scrub with half an onion on a fork.
  2. Ditch lighter fluid – Ditch the chemicals. Use lighter cubes or a chimney starter for a cleaner cook.
  3. Guessing game – Invest in a meat thermometer to avoid raw surprises and nail doneness every time.
  4. Don't lift the lid – Keep it shut! Lock in heat, speed up cooking and infuse that smoky flavour.
  5. Not pre-heating – Cold grills equal to stuck meat and bad sears. Wait until coals turn mostly white, or give gas BBQs a 10–15 min head start.
  6. Sticky marinade mess – Avoid burnt sugar. Try a reverse marinade after cooking for flavour without the flames.
  7. Not one rule for all – Learn the three heat zones: direct (fast cook), indirect (slow roast), and 50/50 (in-between).
