"It's pointless. Any UK recommendations for the Cillit Bang of the weed world?"

The post was flooded with helpful responses from avid gardeners.

Many people suggested pouring white vinegar on the weeds.

One person said: "My wife had some surplus vinegar that she needed to get rid of.

"She poured them on the weeds and it knocked 'em dead".

Another person said: "Put vinegar on them leave for a few days and they well be gone".

Gardening Tips for Healthy Plants

A third person said: "Vinegar on a bright sunny day works marvellous for me."

A fourth person noted: "I use full strength white vinegar and pour it between my patio pavers."

White vinegar is an acidic substance, and the acid breaks down cell walls and removes moisture from weeds, which causes them to die off.

It's also super cheap, and can be picked up from B&M for just 79p.

Although white vinegar is a great weed killer, it is what is known as a nonselective herbicide.

This means that it will kill any plant it comes in to contact with.

Other gardening fans in the group suggested making a mixture with white vinegar, salt and washing up liquid.

Salt works by increasing the levels on ions in the soil and increasing osmotic pressure, which means the weeds will be unable to absorb water and will dry out.
