A1 CLOSED in both directions after horror three-car crash with vehicle ‘mounting pavement and ploughing into cafe’
THE A1 has closed in both directions after a horrific three-vehicle collision which reportedly involved a car mounting the pavement.
Upper Street, which the A1 runs along in Islington, London, has shut following the shocking crash which saw a car "plough into a cafe" at around 7.45am this morning.
Police, ambulance crews, and firefighters quickly rushed to the scene where four people were treated.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "We are currently dealing with a three-vehicle road traffic collision on Upper Street in Islington.
"One vehicle collided with outdoor seating at a nearby café.
"Officers remain at the scene and are working to assess the circumstances.”
London Ambulance Service said it treated four people at the scene.
A spokesperson for the trust told The Sun: "We were called at 7.57am this morning (Thursday 10 April) to reports of a road traffic collision in Upper Street, Islington.
"We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and London’s Air Ambulance.
"The first of our crews arrived in one minute.
"Our crews treated four patients at the scene, before taking two to a London major trauma centre and two to hospital."
Several passersby shared terrifying pictures and videos online, showing one of the damaged vehicles resting against the cafe's outdoor area.
Broken chairs and tables could be spotted scattered along the pavement.
One terrified witness wrote on X: "Shocking crash on Upper Street – a car mounted the pavement and hit a café. Hope everyone’s okay."
The road is currently completely blocked between Highbury Corner and Islington Green.
This has led to heavy traffic congestion in surrounding areas, and there is currently a diversion route in place for a number of buses which use Upper Street.
