In the video, captioned, every day's a school day, Abigail said: "You know spring onions?

"I thought they were a different variety to regular onions.

"But that's not the case".

Abigail revealed to her followers that a spring onion is actually just a small onion, that hasn't yet grown to the size of the regular onions we are used to seeing.

"They're basically like baby onions", she said.

Also known as scallions of green onions, spring onions are known as "immature onions" as their bulbs have not yet had chance to swell in size.

Both the green tops and small bulbs of green onions are edible and can be eaten either raw or cooked.

Abigail's video, which was posted under the username, @abigailguthrie has gone viral, racking up over 100,000 views on TikTok.

TikTok users raced to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many left as baffled as Abigail by the discovery.

One person joked: "From now on I’m only eating fully grown onions because I want it to have lived a life before it enters my digestive tract."

"They’d still be small in spring. Mind blown.

"It was right in our faces this entire time."
